Members of a Hong Kong youth delegation said on Thursday that they were excited about a meeting with central government officials on Friday, as they could learn from leaders about the country’s latest development strategies and share with them their thoughts on Hong Kong’s development.

The delegation, comprising some 150 young people between 18 and 35 coming from different cross sections of society, is on a five-day trip to the mainland with a special focus on innovation and technology.

They visited Shenzhen and Wuhan before arriving in Beijing on Wednesday night.

Kosine Wong Cheuk-yin, an illustrator in Hong Kong, said he was “absolutely interested” in meeting central government leaders. Wong said he wanted to learn from leaders about the latest national strategy on Hong Kong, especially on young people.

Andy Tsang Hin-lam, a freshman at the Chinese University of Hong Kong majoring in History, said many young people in Hong Kong did not really understand the national policy on Hong Kong youth.

He hoped top leaders would provide more guidance on national strategy to help them better integrate textbook knowledge with expediency to build a better society.

Louis Chen Xiaofeng, founder of the internet social networking company BayMate, said the government should encourage more of his peers in Hong Kong to visit mainland cities and communicate with people from different backgrounds in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Chen was born in the mainland and raised in Hong Kong.

Calvin Lau Kai-hong, director of a design company and an indigenous inhabitant of the New Territories in Hong Kong, said he was very excited about meeting central government officials.

As a representative of a local village, Lau hoped the central government would lend an ear to local residents’ voices and provide more developmental support.

Winnie Wang Hong, chairperson of the Hong Kong Youth Power Association, has been working with Hong Kong youth for more than 10 years. Wang said she wanted to tell leaders that working with young people in Hong Kong was actually not as hard as perceived to be. “They just need a job, a place to live in and a goal to work on,” she said.

With right guidance and enough encouragement, Wang believed young people in Hong Kong would make their mark in national development in the future.
